CEP: Lecture Summary Guidelines

  1. The lecture you attend must be CEP-approved. You will receive email notices of upcoming CEP-related lectures. Please note that the lectures are not necessarily spread evenly within the semester.
  2. You must go to the event and submit a 500+ word summary to turnitin.com in order to receive 2 CEP credits (please see step-by-step instructions below).
  3. You have a 2-week window to submit the summary to turnitin.com from the date of the lecture. The 2-week window is set from the beginning of the lecture time. No extensions will be granted.
  4. You cannot double-dip and get CEP credit if you are required to go to the lecture as part of another course or if you plan to get extra credit in another course as part of attending this lecture. If you do so, it is considered cheating (see consequences below).

Instructions for submitting lecture summaries

To receive CEP credit for your lecture summary, please attend to all of the steps listed below:

  1. You are required to attend the lecture and summarize the lecture in your own words (minimum length requirement of 500 words). Your summary must include all of the following:
    1. Background
      1. Course title and number (e.g., 101, Introductory Psychology)
      2. Your Professor's Name
      3. The name of the lecturer/presenter
      4. The date of the presentation
      5. The location of the presentation
      6. The title of the presentation
    2. Your summary of the lecture
      1. Statement of the main theme or purpose of the presentation
      2. The specific hypothesis tested, applicable
      3. Summary of the methods used and procedures followed
      4. Summary of the results, major points, or findings presented
      5. Summary of the major implications of the research

      The summary must be written in your own words, and use quotes when you are quoting the presenter (Please minimize quoting). Academic Honesty Policy for the university is strictly enforced for this assignment. Please note that besides cheating in the conventional way, plagiarism also constitutes a violation of the academic integrity code. Go to www.sju.edu/libraries/drexel/plagiarism/index.htm for an excellent definition and examples of plagiarism. If you cheat or plagiarize on this assignment, all parties involved will receive zero CEP credit with no opportunity for a re-write.

  2. Submit the completed summary to TurnItIn.com.

    Important: Do not include any personally identifying information in your lecture summary (e.g., your name, student ID number, etc.).

    If you have never used TurnItIn.com before:

    1. Go to TurnItIn.com
    2. Click on "Create a user profile" (upper right under the login boxes)
    3. Follow the prompts (e.g., by selecting "student user")
      1. You must use your SJU email address to register.
      2. You can create your own password.
    4. Enter Class ID and enrollment password (scroll down to the bottom of this webpage for this information).
    5. Click on the class link just created.
    6. Several "assignments" will pop up. Click on the lecture that corresponds to your summary.
    7. You can submit papers by uploading a MS Word file from your computer. Upload your file.
    8. For the title of your paper, type in your course #, course name, and professor's name (e.g., PSY 101, Introductory Psychology, Professor Anastasio).
    9. Click Submit.
    10. Turnitin.com will send a confirmation receipt to your SJU email address. If you do not receive it, the submission did not go through properly. If you have problems with the submission, make sure you have carefully gone through each of the steps above before contacting the turnitin.com site administrator, Ms. Peggy Allen.

    If you already have a user profile at TurnItIn.com:

    1. Go to TurnItIn.com
    2. Login with your email address and password
    3. At personal home page, click join new class (red button, upper left)
    4. Enter class ID and enrollment password (see info at bottom of this page)
    5. Click on the class link just created.
    6. Several "assignments" will pop up. Click on the appropriate assignment (e.g., if it's your first time submitting a CEP lecture summary then click on that assignment, etc.)
    7. You can submit papers by uploading a MS Word file from your computer. Upload your file.
    8. For the title of your paper, type in your course #, course name, and professor's name (e.g., PSY 101, Introductory Psychology, Professor Anastasio).
    9. Click Submit.
    10. Turnitin.com will send a confirmation receipt to your SJU email address. If you do not receive it, the submission did not go through properly. If you have problems with the submission, make sure you have carefully gone through each of the steps above before contacting the turnitin.com site administrator, Mr. Andy Starr.

  3. Please allow 1 week for the 2 CEP credits to be posted to your account at http://sju.sona-systems.com.
