Department of Psychology

The Purpose of the Curricular Enhancement Program (CEP) is two fold:

  1. To broaden student understanding of the scientific process in general, and of specific research practices associated with the scientific process.
  2. To increase student familiarity with particular areas of research, the theoretical perspectives upon which that research is based, and the present "state of knowledge" within that particular area.

Courses: All students enrolled in introductory-level psychology courses (i.e., all psychology courses with numbers beginning with a '1') participate in the CEP. In addition, students enrolled in some courses offered by the Departments of Food Marketing, Sociology, and Interdisciplinary Health Services occasionally participate in the CEP. (Your instructor will inform you if you are enrolled in such a course).

Basic Requirements: Each student enrolled in any CEP course must complete three curricular enhancement requirements during the course of the semester. Students enrolled in more than one CEP course do not need to complete more than these requirements. Completion of the requirements will in no way influence the grade that students receive, but receipt of a course grade is dependent upon fulfillment of the requirements.

This requirement may be satisfied in 3 ways:

  1. By participating in research studies/experiments housed in the psychology department. You can check on available research studies by going to www.experimetrix.com/sju. Make sure you show up to your appointment on time or cancel your appointment in advance if you cannot make it, or you will be penalized 1 CEP credit. If you are under 18 years of age, you are not eligible to participate in the research studies. Please see options 2 and 3 for other ways to complete the CEP requirement.
  2. By attending special lectures related to psychology and providing a 500-word written summary of the lecture to turnitin.com. Announcements regarding CEP lectures will be sent to you via email by Dr. Josephine Shih. Make sure you summarize the lectures in your own words and quote where appropriate. Plagiarism will lead to a penalty of 1 CEP credit.
  3. By reading research articles in psychology in your area of interest (they have to be scientific articles, not newspaper articles, editorials, etc.) and providing a 500-word written summary of the article to turnitin.com. You may ask your instructor for recommendations of research articles that are relevant to your current coursework. Alternatively, you can look for articles yourself via the Drexel library system under the psychology database: psycINFO. Make sure you summarize the articles in your own words and quote where appropriate. Plagiarism will lead to a penalty of 1 CEP credit.

Note: Any student who is under 18 years cannot participate in a research study without parental permission. Therefore, they must choose the lecture or article summary options to complete their CEP requirements.

You may choose to complete this 3-credit requirement in any combination of the three methods listed above. All credit-tracking will be conducted through www.experimetrix.com/sju system. Therefore, you must create and/or activate your account with www.experimetrix.com/sju as possible in the semester (see "Getting Started" on the left). The 3 CEP credits must be completed by 5pm on the last day of classes. Failure to complete all 3 CEP credits by the deadline will result in a grade of "Incomplete" for the course.
